kukunest v2

With my help (and Ken’s help too), we just revamped the kukunest Web site ().  It is easier to navigate, faster, and now hosts more products.

Now they have more themes of children’s bedding and art work plus full and toddler sizes.

Great stuff — check it out.

And now back to the regularly scheduled program.

Vista SP1 Beta

On Friday, I updated my laptop using Windows Update; the entire install process went smoothly.

Things I’ve noticed.

  • In the past, remote desktop connections to non-Vista machines always prompted the user to confirm connection.   New in Vista SP1 is the ability to turn off that warning on a computer-by-computer basis.  A small thing, but I found this really irritating in the past.  Cool.
  • The Start -> Search menu is gone.  A little strange, I think.  You can get the same functionality from any explorer window, so I don’t see how this levels the playing field for other search vendors.
  • Strangely enough, when I installed the prerequisites (which are purportedly related to improving Vista update performance), my Alps touchpad tray icon appeared for the first time ever.  I clicked on it and found that, again for the first time ever, the touchpad’s unique “device select” tab was available in the mouse control panel.  Weird, but good.  Now I can turn off the tap while typing.

Things I haven’t noticed.

  • Any changes in stability.  In general, I feel that the stability of Vista has improved over the year, but my Reliability Monitor tells a different tale.  My reliability index moves between 1 and 3 and hasn’t gotten over 5 since July 31st.  I hope that this changes in SP1, though it isn’t clear how much of this is the OS and how much is bad application behavior.  I wish I could weight failures on the system for how they impact me and possibly exclude them from the Reliability Monitor.
  • Any changes in performance.

All in all I’ve been getting happier with Vista as the year has progressed.  I initially had all sorts of networking problems, but Dell or Intel seems to have mostly solved those.  Long gone are the days when I had to reboot my machine to get it on a network.  We even now have a VPN solution that supports Vista.

Aside from the trouble, I like Vista.  The only part I don’t like about it is feeling like an early adopter with it.  After all, why did I install SP1?  To provide feedback to Microsoft, yes, but also in hope that it makes my experience better sooner.

The return of the Newton!

Image:Apple Newton MP100.jpgAppleInsider reports in Up next for Apple: the return of the Newton.

Finally, an upgrade path for my Apple Newton MessagePad 100.  I sure hope they don’t leave us early supporters out in the cold on this one — let’s all team together and demand a deep discount on an upgrade!

The Police

9316724-9316730-slarge

My wife and I went and saw The Police last night in Oakland.  She was a big fan the first time around.  I was not.

Of course, they don’t look much like the guys in this picture.

But they sounded great.  Sting’s voice still sounds terrific and the three of them can really play.  And their music (lyrics, rhythm, melodies, harmonies, the whole lot) is really good.

I didn’t realize how much I identify their music as a natural part of my life — not only did I really enjoy the show, but I was much more engaged in it than I am at a typical show.

Maybe I am a fan after all.

Double Blue Screen of Death

Pretty much the opposite of Double Happiness, John and Dan just got the Double Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) within 30-seconds of each other.

Grabbing some coffee and chatting to John, I saw the whole thing.  Here is what happened.

  • Some months ago, Dan tried to share a folder with John using Windows Live Messenger.
  • John had Windows Messenger, so nothing happened.
  • Windows Messenger has been crashing for John, so today he upgraded to Windows Live Messenger.
  • First thing it does is notice that Dan has offered to share a folder with him.
  • He says, “Sure, I’ll share a folder with you, Dan.”
  • Dan says, “What?” — he doesn’t remember this.
  • Then, John gets the BSOD.
  • Dan and I kind of laugh about it.  Losing your work is no laughing matter, but we laughed just the same.
  • Then Dan gets it too.

While writing this, John got another BSOD.  Making that a Triple Blue Screen of Death (or a Hat Trick of Death, the HTOD).

When will the M-Audio Drivers be available?

Last week I got one of these:

Fast Track Pro

I plan to podcast with it and use it to feed my headphone amp at the office.  I set it up with no problem and it sounds great.

This week I got one of these (on the left) running (on the right):Dell Latitude D820

Now, I am using it as a door stop:

Joking aside, I knew the drivers were unavailable before I bought it.  As a long-time owner of an M-Audio Delta 1010, I bought it having the faith that they would deliver drivers soon.  They did a terrific job getting WDM drivers out back when Microsoft first started supporting them (remember Windows ME?), and I bet they will do the same now.

They are clearly late this time (and some of their competitors are notably on time) and I do have a beef with their public statement (from their site, emphasis mine):

M-Audio has been keeping pace with changes to the Windows Operating System since the release of Windows 95 nearly 12 years ago.  We are very excited about the opportunity to offer continued support to our Windows customers as the Windows Pro Audio community begins the gradual transition to the Vista era.  Over the past year, we have worked directly with Microsoft’s Vista team to prepare for this release.

Currently, M-Audio does not offer Vista drivers or Vista software updates (beta or otherwise).  As soon as Vista drivers or updates for any product are available, this FAQ and other portions of our Web site will be immediately updated to reflect this.  Due to the nature of software and driver development, we are not able to provide exact dates or timeframes for when specific drivers will become available—but please rest assured that supporting Vista is a top priority for us.

If they have worked “directly with Microsoft’s Vista team” for the past year, then they should be able to tell us when the drivers will be available.

When, M-Audio, when?

FeedDemon.Next or Outlook 2007?

As noted before, I recently started using Outlook 2007.  It has improved my ability to track the myriad tasks on my list.  Mainly this is due to its merging standard todo items with emails marked for follow up* in a single view.

This means I’m doing a much better job of getting back to emails than I used to.  In fact, this has caused me to re-consolidate all of my email reading into Outlok 2007 (abandoning gmail).

Now in one place, with one view, I can see all the items on my list (of course, there are still too many, but that is another story).

There is still one thing missing, though:

FeedDemon is my RSS reader of choice.  I often flag items there to read later; however, I rarely ever go back and read those posts.

I would like to see my flagged items (email and RSS) and todos together in Outlook 2007.  How to solve this problem?

  1. FeedDemon changes (best, because then I get everything I want):
    1. FeedDemon begins supporting Outlook 2007 tasks, perhaps the way OneNote 2007 does.
    2. Alternatively, FeedDemon begins (optionally) using the Windows RSS Platform (presumably flags and “read” settings are persisted in the store, though I don’t know).
  2. Or I change: I start using Outlook as an aggregator.  I used to do this with NewsGator in Outlook 2003.  The experience was painful (don’t know if I should blame Outlook, NewsGator, or user error here).  Maybe it is better now.

Thoughts or suggestions anyone?

* And tasks linked with OneNote and, as I understand, Project tasks.

Microsoft Acquires TeamPlain

Very cool — I installed it this morning (now it is a free download) and had it working in munites.  This will make it so much easier for my company to handle the migration of our issue tracking from Gemini into TFS.

From bharry (excerpted heavily):

Today we are announcing that Microsoft has acquired DevBiz Business Solutions, the makers of the popular TeamPlain Web Access for Team System.  TeamPlain is a web front end for VSTS that enables users to access the majority of TFS functionality from within a Web browser.  The focus of TeamPlain is on work item tracking but it also includes some valuable version control capabilities (like viewing history/change sets, diffing files, browsing the source base, etc.), some SharePoint integration, Reporting services integration, and some upcoming build support.  TeamPlain gives VSTS a new avenue to reach a broader array of people within the development team who don’t use Visual Studio today and don’t want to install Visual Studio clients on their machines.  It also improves reach by enabling some access from non-Windows clients.

. . .

TeamPlain will become Microsoft Visual Studio Team System Web Access.  Effective today, TeamPlain is available, at no additional charge, to users who own a Team Foundation Server and can be downloaded from here.  It will be accessible by any user properly licensed with a TFS CAL.  Support will continue to be provided by the current staff via the DevBiz online forums.

To Office 2007

Tuesday, I had lunch with J. LeRoy.

He probably doesn’t remember it this way, but he convinced me to make the switch to Office 2007.  It went something like this:

Jim (All paraphrased):

  • I have finally given up on Outlook.
  • I’m sick of waiting for five minutes for it to start.
  • It never closes when you click on the ‘x’.
  • Business Contacts Manager constantly asked me to reinstall its database.
  • Which database is that?  I remember installing a database.

and the one that convinced me:

  • It does some really cool things with tasks (and follow-up).

That was it.  I had to install it.

Having the tools to manage my to-do list efficiently is kind of my Holy Grail. I have tried various tools and not been happy with any of them.  So I have fallen back to using tasks in Outlook which are synchronized with my Treo.

This works okay, but Outlook 2003 treats tasks as some kind of afterthought.

Outlook 2007 is a much better job with providing a usable UX integrating tasks (and the calendar) across many different views.

And for me, it doesn’t take very long to start.  It also closes when I click on the ‘x’.   I suspect that Jim is having add-in trouble.  Something (probably Business Contacts Manager) is keeping Outlook alive when it shouldn’t.

Now, I’m using the entire Office Ultimate suite.  More on that as I actually start to use it.

Blog changes

I published a few changes to my blog template today.

  1. Upgraded to WordPress 2.1.
  2. Added some plugins:
    1. Feedburner Feed Replacement
    2. Feed Locations
    3. Sidebar Widgets
    4. Ultimate Tag Warrior Widget
  3. Whole new template with dual floating sidebars (from the image on the left to the one on the right).

This post is mostly for me so I can remember when I have made a change, but comments are welcome.

Update: I can see that the sidebar padding is wrong in Firefox, but looks perfect in IE.  Why, why, why do we still have to deal with these incompatibilities?  Argh.
